Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru’s recent production of “Rhinoceros” captivated audiences with its exploration of conformity and individuality. This thought-provoking play, directed by Steffan Donnelly and translated by Manon Steffan Ros, offered a powerful commentary on societal pressures and the importance of remaining true to oneself.
The story unfolds in a seemingly ordinary town where the lives of its inhabitants are disrupted by the sudden appearance of a rhinoceros. As this bizarre event unfolds, one by one, the townspeople begin to transform into rhinoceroses themselves, embracing a newfound simplicity and abandoning their human identities.
Ceri James’ Masterful Lighting Design:
Complementing the play’s powerful message was the masterful lighting design by Ceri James. Utilising a diverse range of lighting fixtures provided by Stage Lighting Services, Ceri effectively created a captivating atmosphere that reflected the play’s themes and emotions.
- Robe Pointe: This powerful moving head fixture, with its exceptional brightness and tight beams, allowed James to highlight specific elements on stage, guiding the audience’s attention to key characters and moments.
- Robe Spikie: This innovative luminaire’s strobe functionalities and dynamic movement added bursts of energy and visual interest, contributing to the sense of unease and tension that permeated the performance.
- Robe Spiider: Offering exceptional flexibility and a wide zoom range, the Robe Spiider enabled James to meticulously illuminate actors and set pieces, shaping the visual narrative and enhancing the emotional impact of the performance.
